Aasara Pension Scheme in Telangana Budget 2023-24
In the 2023-24 fiscal budget, the Telangana Finance Minister announced a provision of Rs. 12,000 crores for the Aasara Pension Scheme. The Minister highlighted that the government significantly boosted monthly support for the elderly, widows, those living with HIV, handloom weavers, and toddy tappers to Rs. 2,016. Additionally, support for persons with disabilities was raised to Rs. 3,016, with a further increase to Rs. 4,016 starting in July 2023. Single women, beedi rollers, and filariasis patients also receive Rs. 2,016 monthly.
“The state government has ushered in a golden era of social welfare. By lowering the eligibility age from 65 to 57, we have expanded coverage, and we have dedicated Rs. 12,000 crores to sustain these vital payments," the minister added.
Launch of the Aasara Pension Scheme
The Aasara Pension Scheme was inaugurated on November 8, 2014, in Kothur, Mahboobnagar. The program provides financial aid to the elderly, widows, individuals with elephantiasis or HIV, those with physical disabilities, beedi workers, and single women.
To address public grievances, the government established Aasara call centers in 2019, overseen by the Ministry of Panchayat Raj and Rural Development. Initially covering 10 districts, this support network was later expanded statewide. The eligibility age threshold was adjusted from 65 to 57 in 2020 to include a larger demographic of vulnerable citizens.
