The Odisha state administration has introduced the Basudha Program (Buxi Jagabandhu Assured Water Supply to Habitations) to guarantee that every home in rural regions has access to safe and purified piped drinking water. This initiative primarily targets rural and water-deficient zones where residents struggle with a lack of reliable potable water.

What is the Basudha Initiative?

The Basudha program prioritizes the delivery of consistent water via advanced pipeline networks and purification facilities, supported by improved sanitation infrastructure. It stands as one of Odisha's most significant rural water endeavors, backed by rigorous oversight and local community participation.

The core objective is to ensure every rural household receives safe, treated drinking water through dedicated pipe connections, particularly in drought-prone or water-stressed villages. This project enhances both the availability and the safety standards of water in these communities.

Coverage Zones & Infrastructure

The program is currently active in regions like Puri, Ganjam, and various other rural districts experiencing water scarcity. Additional blocks and gram panchayats throughout the state are integrated annually to achieve comprehensive coverage.

To ensure a reliable and hygienic supply, the infrastructure includes:

  • Installation of vast networks of new water pipelines.
  • Establishment of modern water treatment and filtration facilities.
  • Construction of storage tanks and reservoirs for efficient supply management.

Water Purity and Testing

To maintain high water safety standards, 78 specialized testing labs have been deployed across the state. Over 500,000 samples are analyzed annually to verify safety before the water reaches households.

Basudha Program Funding

CategoryFinancial Allocation
BASUDHA Rural Piped Water₹1,600 crore
Jal Jeevan Mission₹7,000 crore
Off-Budget Allocation (Mineral-rich districts)₹2,000 crore

This substantial investment facilitates ongoing enhancements to water hygiene, sanitation, and quality control services statewide.

Requesting a Water Connection

Most rural residences are automatically enrolled in this initiative. However, if a household has been missed, they may request a connection by following the steps below.

STEP 1: Visit your local Block Office or Gram Panchayat to report that your home requires a connection under the Basudha program.

STEP 2: Provide a brief written request along with proof of residence, such as a ration card or Aadhaar card.
