The West Bengal administration officially inaugurated the WB Chokher Alo Program 2026 on January 5, 2022. This initiative serves as a significant extension of previous outreach efforts such as Duare Duare Paschim Banga Sarkar and Paray Paray Samadhan Yojana. Through this scheme, the state government provides complimentary eye examinations, surgeries, and corrective eyewear to elderly residents.

WB Chokher Alo Program 2026

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee introduced the WB Chokher Alo Program 2026 to guarantee that elderly citizens receive necessary cataract procedures and general eye care at no personal expense. Launched on January 5, 2022, this project aligns with the state's mission to deliver government services directly to the doorsteps of its citizens.

Complimentary Eye Care and Glasses for Seniors

The Chief Minister has stated that the WB Chokher Alo Program 2026 aims to achieve universal eye health by 2025. The government has pledged to perform cataract surgeries for 2 million senior citizens, with 825,000 of these patients receiving free prescription glasses.

Furthermore, the state will facilitate vision screenings for 1 million students, providing free spectacles to 400,000 of them. Anganwadi staff are also eligible for free eye exams. A dedicated workforce of over 300 medical professionals and 400 optometric technicians has been mobilized for this outreach.

Initial Stage of the Chokher Alo Initiative

The first phase of the scheme commenced on January 5, 2022, targeting 1,200 gram panchayats and 120 primary health centers. Subsequent phases will expand to cover all remaining regions. Additionally, the CM opened a high-tech trauma care center at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital. This 10-crore rupee project features 20 beds, dual operation theaters, and a recovery ward, staffed by expert surgeons to handle critical emergencies.

The Chief Minister noted that while the first trauma facility was established at SSKM Hospital, this new center addresses the medical needs of North Bengal residents. During the event, she also obtained her Swasthya Sathi card at a local camp, emphasizing her commitment to participating in state-run welfare programs alongside other citizens.
