The Central government has released updated guidelines regarding the color coding of vehicle license plates in India for 2026. On July 16, 2020, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) issued this announcement to clarify the standards for vehicle registration plates. Under these updated rules, electric vehicles must feature yellow text on a green background. Vehicles with temporary registration are required to use red text on a yellow background, while dealer-owned vehicles should display white text on a red background. This guide provides a comprehensive breakdown of the official color schemes for all Indian vehicle categories.

This MoRTH notification aims to resolve inconsistencies in the existing regulations regarding how registration marks are assigned across various States and Union Territories. By organizing the requirements into a clear table, the ministry has established specific standards for the colors of characters and backgrounds for every vehicle class.

The updated notification serves as a clarification of existing rules rather than an introduction of new requirements. While the government had previously defined registration marks for different regions, this update standardizes the visual appearance of license plates for various vehicle types to ensure national uniformity.

India Vehicle License Plate Color Schemes

Indian vehicle registration plates follow eight distinct color combinations according to the 2026 guidelines:

  • Private vehicles: Black text on a white background.
  • Commercial vehicles (taxis, buses, trucks): Black text on a yellow background.
  • Rental vehicles: Yellow text on a black background.
  • Foreign diplomatic vehicles (embassies/consulates): White text on a light blue background.
  • Electric/Battery-operated vehicles: Yellow text on a green background.
  • Temporary registration: Red text on a yellow background.
  • Dealer vehicles: White text on a red background.
  • High-ranking officials (President/Governors): A special plate featuring the golden State Emblem of India on a red background.

Beyond standard registrations, there are limited options for vanity license plates. Owners can typically choose the series and the final four digits, provided the combination is currently available. It is recommended to verify the official 2026 color scheme requirements before finalizing a plate for your motorcycle or car.

Security Features of Indian License Plates (HSRP)

High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) became mandatory in 2005, though implementation has varied across states. These plates include specialized security features that make them difficult to remove or swap. If tampered with, the plates are designed to become unusable, preventing the illicit use of stolen registration numbers.

An additional security measure is the hologram sticker attached to the windshield, which includes the vehicle's registration number, issuing authority details, engine and chassis numbers, and a laser-etched PIN. This PIN is verifiable via specialized equipment, and the sticker is engineered to be non-transferable, rendering it void if peeled off. This system is designed to curb vehicle theft and prevent the misuse of license plates.

Official Notification Regarding Plate Colors

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways clarified that this notification reaffirms existing standards established under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Following previous amendments in 1989 and 1992, the ministry aimed to standardize how different vehicle categories are
