Following Supreme Court (SC) mandates, the Delhi Transport Department initiated the mandatory replacement of traditional number plates with tamper-proof HSRPs starting October 12, 2020.
While all newly purchased vehicles in Delhi come pre-equipped with authorized HSRPs, many older models still use standard plates. Transport department estimates suggest approximately 4 million two and four-wheelers in the capital are still awaiting this upgrade.
The HSRP initiative was initially introduced in Delhi during the 2012 fiscal year, and the authorities are currently executing a phased rollout to ensure every vehicle is properly outfitted.
