The Himachal Pradesh administration has introduced the HP Panchvati Yojana 2026, a program dedicated to creating green belts for the elderly. Under this initiative, the government plans to establish parks and gardens equipped with essential amenities in every development block to serve senior citizens living in rural regions. Projects under this scheme will be integrated with the MGNREGA framework. The primary goal is to offer older adults a peaceful environment to enjoy their leisure time in nature.
What is the Himachal Pradesh Panchvati Scheme?
During 2020-21, 364 locations were identified, with development work commencing at 180 of these sites under the 'Panchvati Scheme.' In 2021-22, the project expanded to include 100 additional sites. These parks are being built on leveled plots of land measuring at least one bigha, utilizing a convergence of funds from MGNREGA, the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), and the 14th Finance Commission.
This initiative aims to improve the quality of life and longevity for the elderly by addressing their health and wellness needs. The parks will feature medicinal and Ayurvedic plants, walking paths, recreational equipment, and other necessary facilities. The Department of Rural Development in Himachal Pradesh is responsible for executing this scheme.
