Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) at Talkatora Stadium, New Delhi. Citizens can now access banking facilities through 1.5 lakh post offices, supported by 3 lakh postmen and Grameen Dak Sevaks acting as banking correspondents. IPPB facilitates services such as fund transfers, disbursement of government subsidies, utility bill payments, investments, and insurance. Postmen provide these services directly at customers' homes. The bank operates via 650 branches and 3,250 customer service points. Residents can register for a standard savings or current account at ippbonline.com.
Staff are equipped with smartphones and digital tools to deliver financial services. IPPB also supports digital transactions and helps citizens access government welfare programs, such as the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana for the farming community. It is a government-owned entity under the Department of Posts with 100% equity held by the Government of India, operating under the regulatory oversight of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
The launch event was observed at approximately 3,000 locations nationwide. This initiative aims to expand banking reach to the most remote corners of the country. The updated budgetary allocation for IPPB stands at Rs. 1,435 crore.
