The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Gramin (PMAY-G) is a significant initiative by the Indian Government dedicated to ensuring "Shelter for Everyone" in rural communities. This program, approved by the Union Cabinet on March 23, 2015, and launched on April 1, 2016, is a revamped version of the Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY). The Union Cabinet has sanctioned the extension of PMAY-G from the fiscal years 2024-25 to 2028-29, with an ambitious goal to construct an additional 2 crore rural homes. By August 2025, a total of 2.82 crore homes have been successfully built, including support for 2,68,480 landless families.
PMAY-G 2026 - Key Information
The central government has extended the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Gramin (PMAY-G) until March 2029, setting a new objective to build two crore additional houses in rural regions. This new target complements the initial PMAY-G goal of constructing 2.95 crore houses between 2016 and 2024.
Beneficiaries can now utilize the updated Awaas+ mobile application to conduct their own surveys. For households facing difficulties with self-registration, field officers are available to provide assistance. Every house built under PMAY-G is linked to its geographical coordinates (geo-tagged), verified with Aadhaar, and payments are disbursed directly through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.
PMAY-G Goals and Advantages
- The initial phase of PMAY-G (2016–2024) aimed for the construction of 2.95 crore houses.
- As of August 2025, a total of 2.82 crore houses have been completed.
