Citizens are also eligible to apply for the expansion or upgrading of existing PMEGP, REGP, or MUDRA ventures. This represents the secondary loan phase of the Prime Minister Employment Generation Programme. Applicants may request up to Rs. 1 crore for this second loan, with potential subsidies ranging from 15% to 20% for eligible beneficiaries.

Continuation of PMEGP Scheme 2026

On May 30, 2022, the central government authorized the extension of the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) for a five-year duration, spanning 2021-22 to 2025-26. The total financial allocation for this 15th Finance Commission cycle is Rs. 13,554.42 crore. Official updates have raised the project cost ceiling from Rs. 25 lakh to Rs. 50 lakh for manufacturing ventures and from Rs. 10 lakh to Rs. 20 lakh for service-based businesses.

The definitions for village industries and rural zones have been revised. Panchayati Raj jurisdictions are now classified as rural, while municipal areas are categorized as urban. All authorized agencies are now permitted to process applications regardless of the urban or rural classification of the project site. Applicants from aspirational districts and transgender individuals are now eligible for special consideration and higher subsidy rates.

Since its launch in the 2008-09 fiscal year, the program has supported approximately 7.8 lakh micro-enterprises with subsidies totaling Rs. 19,995 crore, creating an estimated 6.4 million jobs. About 80% of these supported units are located in rural regions, with half owned by women, SC, or ST entrepreneurs.
