The West Bengal administration has officially introduced the WB Sabooj Sathi Scheme for 2026. Under this initiative, the state government plans to provide 20 lakh bicycles to students enrolled in grades 9 through 12. Detailed information is available on the official portal, wbsaboojsathi.gov.in. Eligible individuals can verify bicycle distribution updates, submit feedback via the grievance portal, and access the student login dashboard.

Sabooj Sathi Scheme 2026

The Sabooj Sathi initiative, a flagship program by the Chief Minister, has empowered approximately 84 lakh students with bicycles for their daily commute to school. This project received recognition from the United Nations through the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) award. While the West Bengal government initially aimed to distribute 10 lakh bicycles this fiscal year, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has directed officials to increase the target to 20 lakh units.

Goals of the WB Sabooj Sathi Scheme 2026

The primary purpose of the Sabooj Sathi program is to improve accessibility to secondary education. The initiative aims to achieve the following:

  • Improve student retention rates in schools,
  • Motivate students to pursue higher academic goals,
  • Enhance self-assurance among female students by fostering independence,
  • Encourage the use of sustainable and healthy transport options.

These goals align with the UN’s 2030 Agenda, specifically SDG3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG4 (Quality Education), SDG5 (Gender Equality), and SDG13 (Climate Action).

Current Status of the WB Sabuj Sathi Initiative

Since its inception in 2015, over 82 lakh bicycles have been distributed, covering nearly 1 crore students. Launched by CM Mamata Banerjee, the scheme highlights the government's commitment to empowering youth through mobility. The official program logo is prominently displayed on the bicycle baskets. The distribution drive was formally inaugurated by the Chief Minister in October 2015 in Paschim Medinipur.
