The Smart Ration Card Initiative, operating under the NFSA, is a modern program introduced by the Punjab administration, launched on September 12, 2020, by former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. The Punjab state authorities officially approved replacing traditional blue cards from the Atta-Dal program with upgraded smart ration cards. Renamed the Smart Ration Card Scheme, this project serves 14.1 million beneficiaries. Additionally, the CM introduced a state-funded initiative to provide subsidized food supplies to 900,000 residents not currently covered by the NFSA.
Smart Ration Cards allow users to collect food grains at Fair Price Shops (FPS) using e-PoS terminals, eliminating the need for physical paperwork. Family records are instantly retrieved at these shops by swiping the card through the e-PoS device. To finalize the collection of rations, beneficiaries must complete a biometric verification scan after the card swipe.
A primary advantage of these smart cards is intra-state portability, which enables cardholders to collect their allocated food grains from any location within Punjab, regardless of their registered home district.
District Deputy Commissioners are tasked with overseeing the re-verification of all beneficiaries. The Punjab government has begun issuing chip-enabled smart ration cards to ensure subsidized food reaches BPL households efficiently.

How to Apply for the Smart Ration Card
Beneficiary data has been digitized and is accessible via the transparency portal managed by the Punjab Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department at http://foodsuppb.gov.in/.
Through this initiative, the Punjab government intends to issue smart cards to roughly 3.6 million NFSA-covered families.
Currently, the state government has not released a new online application portal. It is expected that existing cardholders will receive their upgraded cards through their local Fair Price Shops or via postal delivery to their registered addresses.
Users can view lists of active Fair Price Shops on the official portal by filtering by district and block. This initiative aligns with the National Food Security Act of 2013, and the government has successfully linked beneficiary records with Aadhaar numbers.
