The Tripura administration is launching the Solar Study Lamp (SSL) Initiative 2026 to assist students. Under this Tripura Solar Study Lamp Program, the state government will distribute 600,000 eco-friendly solar lamps to students from economically disadvantaged households. Each pupil can acquire these solar-powered lamps for a nominal fee of just Rs. 10. This project operates in alignment with the SSL guidelines established by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

In the initial phase of the Tripura Solar Study Lamp Program, 300,000 units will be distributed, with the remaining 300,000 provided during the second phase. The central government will cover 80% of the funding for the Tripura Solar Lamp Project, while the state government will fund the remainder.

Tripura’s Deputy Chief Minister, Jishnu Dev Varma, inaugurated the distribution of these lamps at a ceremony held in Bishramganj, western Tripura, on March 11, 2020. The Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) serves as the primary state body responsible for executing this solar lamp initiative.

Tripura Solar Study Lamp (SSL) Program 2026

As part of the Tripura Solar Study Lamp Program, the government collects a symbolic payment of Rs. 10 from each student recipient. During the first phase, the state will supply lamps to 300,000 underprivileged students, with another 300,000 units planned for the second phase. The state has already requested that the MNRE approve an additional 300,000 lamps to support the northeastern region, as many remote and tribal villages currently lack consistent 24/7 power grid connectivity.

Goal of the Solar Study Lamp Program

Solar study lamps utilize renewable energy to provide students with a reliable light source for their evening studies. These lamps offer a practical alternative for households that have historically relied on hazardous kerosene lamps. Solar lighting is highly advantageous due to its low operational cost, superior brightness, and the expansive illumination it provides.

Beyond supporting education, the Solar Study Lamp Program aims to foster economic independence for women and, most importantly, reduce reliance on kerosene to minimize indoor air pollution.

How Solar Study Lamps Function

Each lamp features a photovoltaic panel that transforms sunlight into electrical energy. By tapping into India's abundant sunshine, these lamps provide a sustainable and scalable lighting solution for Tripura’s underserved regions. This initiative helps students maintain their academic performance by ensuring they have consistent lighting for their evening studies, even during the rainy season.

The Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura distributed an initial 519 units during the program's launch event. The current administration remains committed to providing the best possible educational resources to all students.
