The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has officially commenced Swachh Survekshan 2023. The Central government initiated this program under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) to prioritize the long-term viability of sanitation projects and foster broad public engagement. The Swachh Survekshan 2026 state performance rankings will be published shortly. State-level rankings for the 2023 survey have already been released.

Each year, the Swachh Survekshan framework is updated to refine the evaluation process and reinforce lasting behavioral improvements. This sixth iteration of the annual cleanliness assessment emphasizes wastewater management and additional performance metrics. The Swachh Bharat survey covers urban areas nationwide, focusing specifically on achieving garbage-free and open-defecation-free status.

What is Swachh Survekshan

Swachh Survekshan is a yearly assessment of urban cleanliness, hygiene, and public sanitation across India. Introduced as a key component of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, it aims to maintain a clean nation and eliminate open defecation. The inaugural survey in 2016 evaluated 73 cities; by 2020, the initiative expanded to 4,242 cities, establishing it as the world's largest cleanliness survey.

To broaden the scope of these rankings and motivate local bodies to adopt innovative and efficient mission practices, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) is currently administering the sixth survey edition. This project ranks urban centers under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) in collaboration with the Quality Council of India (QCI).
