The Tamil Nadu government has officially announced the 2025 Free Laptop Program for college students, with the distribution phase scheduled to commence between February and March 2026. This initiative aims to provide 20 lakh students throughout the state with complimentary laptops or tablets over the next two years. The state authorities have earmarked a budget of ₹2,000 crore for the 2025-26 fiscal year, with an equivalent allocation planned for 2026-27 to support the distribution process.
Latest Update (November 2025): The Tamil Nadu administration has successfully concluded tender contracts with three major global firms—Acer, Dell, and HP—to provide devices for this initiative. Approximately 20 lakh students enrolled in over 4,600 Arts, Science, Engineering, Agriculture, and Medical institutions are set to receive their units between February and March 2026. Initial units will be finalized by late 2025 or early 2026, following rigorous evaluations by technical panels from Anna University, IIT, and the NIC. Each device will feature a 15-inch display, an Intel i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 processor, 8-12 GB of RAM, and 256 GB of SSD storage.
The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) will oversee the program's execution using an integrated ERP system and a dedicated mobile application. This infrastructure will manage student applications, device handovers, and maintenance inquiries. Eligible candidates from various fields, including Arts, Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine, and Polytechnic institutions, are covered under this policy.
