The Telangana Sheep Distribution initiative 2026 is a government-subsidized program introduced by the Government of Telangana. Following the successful completion of the first two phases, preparations for Phase 3 are currently underway. The project will soon restart, delivering new livestock units to pre-approved beneficiaries who have already contributed their required share.

Update on Phase 3 of the Sheep Distribution Program

Former Chief Minister KCR authorized the commencement of the third phase during the current fiscal cycle. The state government has earmarked dedicated funds for this phase in the 2022-23 budget. The distribution of livestock to eligible shepherds and producer cooperatives will resume shortly.

Overview of Phase 2

The second phase of this initiative was initiated on October 24, 2021, and has since concluded. Per official directives, 3.5 lakh sheep were provided, with each eligible member of the Golla Kuruma community receiving a unit of 20 animals. Approximately Rs. 6,000 crore was invested in this phase. In the first phase, the government allocated Rs. 5,000 crore to distribute 3.74 lakh sheep units.

The unit price was adjusted to Rs. 1,75,000, leading to a rise in the beneficiary's 25% contribution from Rs. 31,250 to Rs. 43,750. A total of 2,797 participants successfully paid their adjusted share and received their designated units consisting of 20 ewes and one ram.

Socio-Economic Impact

Programs supporting the Golla Kuruma, Yadav, and Mudiraj communities have shown significant success. Telangana has now achieved the highest sheep population in India, surpassing Rajasthan. KCR noted that the agricultural sector faced immense challenges during the period of unified Andhra Pradesh, with traditional livelihoods largely ignored by previous administrations.

The state has also risen to prominence in the dairy sector, supported by subsidies and streamlined operations at state-run dairies like Vijaya and Karimnagar. Furthermore, the handloom sector, once a cornerstone of traditional employment, is being revitalized after enduring years of neglect and hardship.

Phase 1 Implementation Details

The initial phase was launched by the state government on January 16, 2021. Implementation was temporarily paused in 2020 due to the global COVID-19 health crisis. Officials were directed to finalize the first phase, which successfully distributed livestock to shepherds and local producer societies, starting from Nalgonda.

Inception of the 1st Phase

As previously mentioned, the first phase began in Nalgonda on January 16, 2021. The state continues its commitment to supporting sheep-rearing communities through the
