UP Free Ration Program 2026 - Distribution Schedule for Cardholders from April 13 to April 24

The Uttar Pradesh administration initiated the distribution of complimentary food supplies to eligible cardholders under the UP Free Ration Scheme starting April 13, 2023. This distribution drive is scheduled to remain active until April 24, 2023. To receive their rations, cardholders must present their identification at authorized local ration outlets. In accordance with the National Food Security Act 2013 (NFSA), residents are entitled to monthly food provisions. Eligible recipients can collect their rations throughout the state between April 13 and April 24, 2023.

Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, the central government headed by PM Narendra Modi has provided free ration assistance to underprivileged households. Previously, these provisions were managed under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY). Effective January 1, 2023, the government transitioned the distribution of these rations under the NFSA framework. To date, the initiative has supported 81.35 crore citizens, with plans to continue through December 2023. Support is extended under the NFSA to priority households as well as families registered under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana.

Details of the UP Free Ration Scheme 2026

The PMGKAY initiative was conducted in seven distinct stages from April 2020 to December 2022, requiring a total investment of Rs. 3.43 trillion from the central government. Expenditure remained below initial projections because the actual grain uptake by states during the 7th phase (October to December 2022) was 9.17 million tonnes. Consequently, the final expenditure for the concluding phase of PMGKAY totaled Rs. 34,208 crore, significantly lower than the projected Rs. 44,762 crore.

Since the program's inception in April 2020, the Central government has distributed over 100 MT of food grains to assist those impacted by the Covid-19 health crisis. Records indicate that between October and December 2022, states successfully procured 1.89 MT of the allotted 2.11 MT of wheat, and 7.27 MT of the 9.89 MT of rice allocated under PMGKAY. The scheme has operated consistently with occasional extensions, with the most recent three-month extension lasting until December 31, 2022.

Yogi Government's Decision on Free Ration Distribution

The Uttar Pradesh administration has officially approved the continuation of the free ration initiative for low-income citizens. Currently, distribution camps are being organized from April 13 to April 24. While political opponents suggest this move is influenced by the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections to strengthen the BJP's standing in the state, the policy is officially positioned as a relief measure for the economically disadvantaged. Given that the provision of free rations was a key factor in the recent state assembly election success, the government remains committed to supporting vulnerable families through this program.

The Yogi government is actively expanding the reach of its free food distribution program. Following a proposal submitted by the Department of Food and Civil Supplies, the government has received authorization to broaden the initiative's scope. With 15 crore current beneficiaries, the administration aims to increase this total even further.
