Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy recently distributed Rs. 261 crore under the YSR Vahana Mitra program, granting Rs. 10,000 in financial aid to owner-cum-drivers of auto-rickshaws, taxis, and maxi-cabs. This marks the fourth straight year of consistent support for the transportation sector, benefiting 2.61 lakh self-employed individuals.

Addressing the recipients, CM Reddy noted that the Vahana Mitra initiative was launched within four months of his government taking office. "During my 3,648 km state-wide journey, many taxi and auto operators voiced their struggles regarding vehicle insurance and fitness certificate costs. To prevent these drivers from falling into debt traps set by private lenders, we introduced this welfare scheme," the Chief Minister stated.
He further remarked, "Families operating their own taxis or autos are choosing a path of self-reliance. They contribute significantly to the economy by providing daily transport for thousands. Our government remains committed to supporting them via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). To date, the state has invested Rs 1,025 crore, with each beneficiary receiving a total of Rs 40,000 over the past four years."
Vahana Mitra is a dedicated welfare program for auto, taxi, and maxi-cab owners where eligible drivers receive Rs. 10,000 annually to cover vehicle maintenance costs. Launched in September 2019, the state government has since simplified eligibility criteria to ensure a wider reach for auto and car owner-operators.
