About the Maharashtra Baby Care Kit Program 2026
The Maharashtra Baby Care Kit Program aims to incentivize hospital deliveries by providing mothers with comprehensive care packages for their newborns. This initiative promotes better nourishment and health standards, similar to successful models currently implemented in Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. By encouraging institutional births, the state hopes to significantly lower the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR). The relevant department is currently finalizing an Rs. 80 crore proposal to fund these distribution kits.

Data from an RTI report indicated that approximately 13,500 infant deaths occurred between April 2017 and February 2018. The causes included premature birth (22%), asphyxia (12%), congenital issues (10%), pneumonia (7%), and other various complications (7%).
The Department of Women and Child Development notes that out of 20 lakh annual births in the state, only half are currently registered at government health facilities. This initiative targets these families, particularly the 4 lakh women who are first-time mothers.
